Windows 10's make or break feature: The Start menu

The success or failure of Windows 10 could come down to a single button.

After taking a three-year hiatus, the Start menu is back in a big way in Windows 10, which Microsoft is set to release on July 29. Clicking the Start button in Windows 10 will provide a gateway to the most important and most-used apps on your PC.As in every version of Windows from 95 to 7, the Start menu in Windows 10 will be where you access all of your programs, organized alphabetically. It also will have quick links to important items like settings and power.
But like Windows 8, the new Start button will also feature two columns of resizable tiles that update with the latest information about weather, social media messages, sports scores, stock prices, your latest photos and more.
First, let's take a tour of the pre-Windows 10 history of the Start menu:
Windows 95, 98 and Me: Microsoft's first take on the Start menu (below) grouped all the PC's program files, documents, settings and power management in one place.Windows XP, Vista and 7: Microsoft redesigned the Start menu in 2001 (below) -- adding a second column of quick locations. It included an avatar and allowed people to pin their most-used or favorite programs to Start. That version remained in place (with a few tweaks) through Windows 7.Windows 8: Then in 2012, Start went noticeably absent when Microsoft unveiled its latest operating system.
And customer reaction ranged from confusion to fury.

But Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) also knows that it must get the Windows 10 Start menu exactly right. So it has been sharing iterations of it with anyone who has a preview version of the program.
Microsoft says it's getting close to the final version, but still it keeps tinkering. The latest tweak came on Friday.
Here is what how the development of the Windows 10 Start menu has evolved over the past several months.
October 1, 2014: When Microsoft first introduced the Windows 10 preview, the Start menu (below) looked like a 50/50 mashup of Windows 7 and Windows 8.
On the left was a virtual carbon copy of the Windows 7 Start menu, and on the right was a replica of the Windows 8 "Start screen" with live tiles.
The location of the power button was the top left, and search was located on the bottom left.February 16: Microsoft added the ability to expand the Start menu full-screen (below). A diagonal expand button was added to the top right, which is where the power button migrated to.The left-hand column (below) was more clearly divided into "places," "most used" and "recently added" categories, and the arrow for "all apps" was changed from horizontal to vertical.April 30: Microsoft then began to refine the look of the Start menu (below). The power settings moved again, this time to the bottom left. The "places" category and icons were eliminated, replaced with a few lines of text, including "file explorer," "documents" and settings. The "all apps" arrow was swapped out for a new icon.
May 29: Microsoft once again fine tuned Start (below). The menu is no longer expandable with the click of a button -- it's now a setting that you toggle. The settings also allow you to customize your experience. For example, do you want recently opened apps to automatically appear there?
Microsoft also once again added buttons for file explorer and settings, moving them below the list of recent apps and above power.So what now? The Windows 10 Start menu is a major improvement over Windows 8, for sure. But it doesn't feel quite polished.
For example, Microsoft confusingly has put notifications in three separate locations. Want status updates and emails? That's in your Action Center. Want your daily news briefing? That's in Cortana. Want your latest social media updates? That's Start.
Still, Microsoft should be lauded for listening to customer feedback and rapidly making changes. And the best part of all: Even after Windows 10 is released, Microsoft will still be noodling and tinkering, sending out frequent minor updates based on how real users like the product.
Now that's a change we can all get behind.

Portadown's Tim Mouncey is banned after Facebook post

Mouncey has been handed a one-match suspension and a £100 fine in relation to a Facebook post back in April which followed his team mate Chris Casement's initial unsuccessful appeal against an alleged headbutting offence.
In the post he slammed the linesman who had insisted that he saw Casement headbutt Dungannon Swift's Terry Fitzpatrick during a Danske Bank Premiership match against Dungannon Swifts in March, branding him an 'absolute disgrace' and also claiming that the issue was 'an embarrassment to Irish League football.'
Although Casement later was cleared of headbutting in a further appeal, Mouncey was still found guilty under Article 16 of the IFA Disciplinary Code.
Casement was facing a potential six-match ban for the offence, which would have ruled him out of the Ports' Irish Cup final meeting with Glentoran, but that was scrubbed after the second appeal.
Portadown manager Ronnie McFall has also received a warning for the comments he made about the officials after the Glens beat them in the Irish Cup decider with a goal seconds after Michael Gault appeared to be fouled.

As Cameratas da Orquestra Sinfônica da Bahia (OSBA) fazem oito apresentações gratuitas durante o mês de junho, em Salvador.
Nesta terça-feira (2), o Quarteto Novo é a atração das Terças Musicais, no Museu Geológico da Bahia, no Corredor da Vitória, às 16h30. Na semana seguinte, em 9 de junho, o grupo participa da tradicional Trezena de Santo Antônio, na Igreja de Santo Antonio da Barra (Ladeira da Barra), às 18h. Em 12 de junho, o concerto será na Igreja de Santo Antônio Além do Carmo, no Centro Histórico, e contará com a presença do grupo Opus Lúmen, às 19h30. Outro destaque da série de apresentações é o grupo Bahia Cordas, em 3 de junho, em concerto no Museu de Arte Sacra da Bahia (Rua do Sodré), às 15h.
Formadas por músicos da OSBA, as Cameratas promovem a formação de plateias apresentando um repertório que destaca os grandes compositores e obras significativas da música de concerto em todo o mundo.

Más de 1600 policías garantizarán seguridad en Deportivo Cali vs. Millonarios


La Policía Metropolitana de Cali visitó este sábado el estadio del Deportivo Cali, ubicado en Palmaseca, sobre la recta que comunica a Palmira con la capital del Valle del Cauca, donde realizó una inspección de cara al partido de este domingo entre el equipo verdiblanco y Millonarios, donde se define el conjunto que disputará la final de la Liga Águila.
Tras confirmar que 1600 policías garantizarán la seguridad durante la fiesta deportiva, el comandante operativo de la Policía de Cali, coronel Wílliam Sánchez, aseguró que se han identificado más de cien puntos de concentración de hinchas en Cali y municipios aledaños sobre los cuales se prestará especial atención para evitar alteraciones del orden público.
Asimismo, indicó que se dispuso de tres anillos de seguridad para el ingreso de los aficionados, el cual será habilitado a partir de las 3:30 de la tarde. Entretanto, el comandante de la Policía del Valle del Cauca, coronel Fernando Murillo, aseguró que los integrantes de barras bravas de Millonarios y personas con camisetas alusivas a este equipo no podrán entrar al estadio. 
No se permitirá el ingreso de niños menores de 7 años a ninguna de las tribunas y tampoco de menores de 5 años a las suites occidental y oriental. 
Tampoco se permitirá el ingreso de rollos y botellas plásticas o de vidrio, además de que estará prohibida la venta y consumo de licor alrededor y dentro del escenario deportivo, así como el uso de bengalas y pólvora. Los vendedores ambulantes no se podrán ubicar a las afueras del estadio y tampoco se les permitirá instalar puntos de venta dentro del circuito deportivo.
Finalmente, la Policía hace un llamado a la comunidad para que antes, durante y después del partido mantenga un buen comportamiento y actitud, pues “no se justifica que por diferencias entre hinchas se generen desmanes que podría terminar con la pérdida de vidas”.

Recomendaciones de seguridad

1- Para evitar la congestión vehicular se recomienda hacer uso del transporte público o si es el caso que varias personas se movilicen en un solo vehículo.
2- Dejar los vehículos bien asegurados en sitios autorizados y con vigilancia.
3- Constatar de no dejar las llaves en el interruptor de encendido del vehículo o la motocicleta.
4- No portar objetos de valor, ni dejarlos dentro del vehículo.
5- No dejar los documentos dentro del vehículo.
6- La Policía Metropolitana hace un llamado a la comunidad en general, para que durante el partido y una vez terminado este, mantengan un buen comportamiento y actitud, no se justifica que por diferencias entre hinchas se generen desmanes con pérdidas de vidas.
7- Ante cualquier situación anómala favor informar al 123, 156 de la Red de Cooperantes.

Kärnten muss 2016 50 Millionen Euro einsparen. SPÖ präsentierte Vorschläge für Sparpaket, Regierungssitzung und Budgetklausur finden am Dienstag statt.

Die Kärntner SPÖ hat am Montag im Parteivorstand über Sparvorschläge diskutiert. Kärnten muss 2016 50 Millionen Euro einsparen, wie es der Rahmenvertrag mit der Bundesfinanzierungsagentur ÖBFA vorsieht. Zudem müssen heuer Einnahmenausfälle ausgeglichen werden. Die SPÖ möchte unter anderem die Zahl der vom Land bezahlten Lehrer reduzieren sowie bei Parteien, Verwaltung und Gesundheit sparen.

Sparpaket bis Ende Juli

Im Anschluss an die Sitzung der Landesregierung am (morgigen) Dienstag wird eine Budgetklausur mit allen Regierungsmitgliedern stattfinden. SPÖ-Chef Peter Kaiser sagte am Montag nach dem Parteivorstand, dass es die erste von vielen Klausuren sein werde. Bis Ende Juli soll ein Sparpaket stehen. Alle Regierungsmitglieder sollen aus ihren Bereichen Vorschläge bringen.

Sparen bei der Politik

Die SPÖ möchte die Gelder, die an die Parteien fließen, kürzen. Derzeit lukriert die Kärntner Politik vor allem über Parteien- und Klubförderung 11,5 Millionen Euro jährlich. Kaiser möchte daraus einen einstelligen Millionenbetrag machen. "Die Bevölkerung soll sehen, dass wir im eigenen Bereich anfangen." Weiters sollen Überhanglehrer, das sind jene Lehrer, deren Gehalt nicht vom Bund refundiert wird, abgebaut werden. Immerhin wird Kärnten im kommenden Schuljahr 900 Schüler weniger haben.

Weniger Förderungen

Die SPÖ möchte auch die Förderungen überarbeiten. Viele Posten seien so gering, dass die Bearbeitung mehr kostet, als der Betrag für den Betroffenen schließlich ausmacht, sagte Kaiser. Für die Verwaltung soll es eine Nulllohnrunde oder eine nur minimale Erhöhung geben. Außerdem soll es für Vertragsbedienstete ein Modell der Altersteilzeit geben. Die SPÖ möchte außerdem die landwirtschaftlichen Schulen ins Bildungswesen integrieren. Die Sparmaßnahmen könnten Kärnten einen Anstieg bei den  Arbeitslosen bringen, sagte Kaiser. Dies müsse jedoch unter den gegebenen Rahmenbedingungen in Kauf genommen werden.

Unfinished Windows 10 makes itself indispensable

It's worth installing a test version of Windows 10 and having a say in how you'd like it to run.


It's surely saying something that an operating system meant only for testing, that warns you not to install it on "your everyday computer" because it's not yet ready for everyday use, has become the system we have been using all day every day of late.
And it's certainly saying something that, even after that very operating system did what we were warned it might do, freezing up and eating an entire morning's work, we still continue to use it here in the Digital Life Labs and rely on it for most of our work. I'm relying on it now, to write this column, for instance.
Actually, it's saying several things.
One is that the system in question, the soon-to-be-released Microsoft Windows 10, has already become pretty good, even though it's not finished and still has bugs in it that, from time to time, cause it to freeze up. When it's finished in a month or so from now (it's expected to be launched in late July), Windows 10 is almost certainly going to be very good indeed.
Another is that the system Windows 10 is designed to replace, Microsoft Windows 8, hasn't set a very high bar as far as replaceability goes. In fact, it's set a bar so low, even unfinished software that crashes and costs us hours of work is preferable.
And the third thing it says is we're a little reckless and probably should have heeded Microsoft's advice and hung onto Windows 8 for just a bit longer, before we booted it onto the street.
But it's hard to resist the charms of Windows 10, one of which is that it no longer has that Windows 8 charm bar over to the right of the screen, but rather makes use of the charm bar gesture (a right-to-left slide on the edge of the screen, if you have a touch-screen device) for a notifications and settings bar, just like you might find on a mobile phone.
It's probably no coincidence that Windows 10 is starting to share features with mobile phone operating systems, because Microsoft's plan is for it to operate more or less universally, regardless of whether you're using it on a notebook PC, tablet or mobile phone.
Oh bugger! The word processor I am writing this in just crashed. But I didn't lose any work this time. It's a measure of how keen I am to get off Windows 8 that I'm sticking with it.
The last time we reviewed Windows 10, it was an older test "build" of the software, since which there have been three or four major updates.
Our main complaint then was that Windows 10 felt like a quick and dirty overhaul of Windows 8, in which some features had been updated and some not. Using it was like walking through a supposedly renovated house, only to open a door and find an entire wing that still had the old wallpaper.
Well I'm pleased to tell you that, with each new build, the renovation is getting more complete. With this latest version, pretty well all of the the rooms have been done, though you can still find signs of the old wallpaper when you open the cupboards, or peer under the sink.
"Settings" is the most obvious example. In the earlier builds of Windows 10, as with Windows 8, you didn't have to use the new, universal-style settings too long before you wound up back in the old Windows-style of settings.
But with every build, more and more are getting refashioned in the universal style, which is designed to work just as well with your finger touching the screen as with a mouse and keyboard.
The start menus and the task bar, too, are getting better with every build, to the point where many features are starting to work exactly as you hope they might when you click on them.
Click on the date and time on the task bar, for instance, and up pops a big, friendly calendar, which is exactly what I've always wanted that click to do. I realise I've been making that click for years, on both Windows machines and Macs, but never getting the result I wanted until now.
It's as if, with Windows 10, Microsoft has somehow been listening to its customers and letting us decide how things should operate.
Which is precisely what Microsoft has been doing. A large purpose of these Windows 10 builds, flawed as they may be, is to allow Microsoft to watch how people do things and tailor the final product to match.
If nobody clicks on a feature, or if a lot of people click on a feature but then back out of it because it's not what they were hoping for, Microsoft pays attention. With every passing build, it's becoming increasingly evident Windows 10 is going to be an operating system for the people.
So before it's too late, you should install a test build of Windows 10 on your everyday PC and start using it, so Microsoft can gauge how you want your operating system to work You'll be doing all of us a favour.
You just might not be doing yourself any favours, not in the short term, not if you lose work when it freezes up.
